When I bought my car, I bought it knowing that it had a very small and easily removable patch of rust on the drivers side fender. The other day I noticed that there was rust beginning on the other side along the inside of the fender (also very small amount) So I decided to take off the bumper and see what was really going on in there...

To my surprise the drivers side wasn't too bad... just that same small rust patch it always had, still easily removable. The passenger side on the other hand was a whole different story, all that undercoating, was hiding an oh so lovely surprise, I poked it a little bit, and this is what happened... (that hole was not there before)

So I took a screwdriver to it (just to knock any loose stuff off)...

Here is the driver side rust that I thought was going to be the biggest problem:

Here is the smaller amount that I saw on the passenger side that I thought was going to be nothing big:

Apparently I was wrong.

Trying to decide if I should spend the time and fix it, or just buy another car, or both.

spray trimclad rust paint in black on it and put the bumper back on it and drive it till the paint on the quarter starts bubbling underneath then sell it lol

Haha, well I put the bumper back on (for now), but I need someone to lean against the back of it to get it on right. I would have done something but I have to work tomorrow and I am way to lazy to do anything today. I think I will just chop off what I can, fix the easy stuff, paint it, sell it, get a new car. Because no matter what that rust will come back eventually. But yeah it basically looked like someone had put the undercoat right on top of the rust to cover it up...

My old Datsun was the same way, rust surprize! Get some rust converter spray, it'll slow it down untill you can cut it out.

If you don't want to deal with it just paint over with a rust preventing paint of your choice and drive it till you consider it too ugly and buy a new 5th gen ( if you want to keep any parts off the other car). This is a good excuse the buy a car the color you like instead of painting the one you have ( if you don't know the color now)

I have (I think) decided to chop out what I can under the bumper, and start to take out what is on the fenders and go from there, it really depends what surprises are lurking under that paint.... if it turns out to be really bad I will do exactly what you are saying. lol I used to hate the colour... now it is one of the reasons that I do not want to sell the car, it is a little embarrassing to admit, but I have grown to love it! haha

Used cars are so worthless these days it is almost pointless investing in them.

Clean it back up and sell it to someone that doesn't care and start with a solid platform.
